The 10th International Forum on
Design Management Research and Education
Design and Knowledge Management
Frankfurt, Germany
November 16-18, 2000
Conference Overview
Every organization has a variety of levels and dimensions of competence.
Each must face the challenge of managing these competencies to be
successful in the arena of a complex, fast changing, and global
marketplace. Knowledge and information, in a myriad of forms, is
the cornerstone of competence. These dimensions of competence range
from word-based information to visual information; from linquistic
intelligence to visual intelligence; from individual knowledge to
communities of knowledge; from marketing expertise to design expertise.
And, there are many development and use similarities in each area.
For example, tacit knowledge is often developed through interaction
and is typically unwritten expertise. It may exist in
individuals or in organizations. Also, technological information
may develop in research laboratories and be disseminated verbally,
through presentations or formal reports. Each has importance to
the total competence and strategic advantage of the organization.
The 10th International Forum on Design Management Research & Education
brings together academics, and practitioners to examine these issues
from the perspective of knowledge management. The Forum will focus
on the relationship of design to knowledge management in response
to a variety of perspectives on strategic competence, knowledge,
learning and organizational processes. Academics and practitioners
will present a variety of papers, and participate in panel discussions.
There will be an emphasis on interaction and exchange throughout
the Forum.
