Many of us who studied design in college missed those ‘leadership classes’ typically offered to the business students—our educational focus was on learning creative processes and improving our visual skills. But times have changed. As the definition of corporate competitiveness evolves, the expectations placed upon the design profession grow exponentially. As advocates of innovation and creative thinking, designers are perfectly predisposed to strengthen their organization’s competitive position. However, the demand for design leaders far outstrips the supply.

The prevailing myth of the charismatic leader as a solitary figure wielding ultimate power and authority is no longer applicable. The capacity to foster collective action, mobilizing people to advance new levels of competitiveness is the new definition of leadership. This seminar will examine the fundamental precepts of leadership, diagnose the role of the design leader, explore how core leadership skills can be learned, applied and leveraged as well as help you develop your own personal leadership style.

What you will learn:

  • Context: examining leadership and its impact on the design profession

  • Mindsets: deciphering the myth, mystique and specific traits of leadership

  • Strategic relations: what are the nuances between managing and leading

  • Reinvention: how to hone your ‘inner-leader’ skills

  • Perpetuating a Culture of Leadership: strategies on fostering the next generation of leaders

Who should attend:

As designers ascend the management ladder, one of the hardest challenges they will face is conquering the ‘soft’ skills of leadership. If you’re interested in fine-tuning your personal leadership capabilities, and/or are responsible for fostering that aptitude in others within your organization, this seminar is definitely for you.

How you will benefit:

Through readings, assignments, Socratic-styled discussions and experience-based exercises, this seminar provides participants with specific tools that will transfer leadership skills into effective practice.
