Design Leadership Series Webinar
Sponsored by Microsoft
Why the Blue Sky Must Die
Getting real with how design can help business and people

Wednesday, August 6, 1pm EDT (Online)
Tim Wallack, Director, Insights & Strategy, Smart Design

Tim Wallack

One day at Smart Design, not so long ago, a new client hired us to run a seminar on innovation. Did they want creative, generative tools? Were they interested in new brainstorming techniques? No. They were flooded with ideas. They needed help finding the right ones. This wasn’t Nike, Apple or HP – it was a large financial institution! To us, it was the final signal the momentum had shifted from discovering what’s new and possible to discovering what’s right (for people, business and brands).

This webinar takes a look at why this change is happening and what thinking, sensibilities and tools we can use to meet these new challenges. It is appropriate for any design manager, designer, marketer or design strategist who would like to pick up some new tools, techniques, and anecdotes about finding the right design solution. No brainstorming techniques will be offered.

DMI Synergy Conference: Conference Report
Synergy
June 11-13, 2008, Cincinnati, USA

By Margo Johnson, President, SUPERSEED

I spent a few days at Synergy, DMI’s Brand/Design 20 Conference in June 2008, where experts explored synergy, collaboration, and strategy. With around 125 attendees, the event was just the right size for a more intimate gathering. As my first DMI event ever, I was impressed with the valuable insight from speakers and diverse attendees.

Eight themes in particular were standouts for me...

DMI Review Download of the Month
The Designful Company
By Marty Neumeier, President, Neutron
From the Design Management Review, Vol. 19, No. 2, Spring 2008

In a challenging business environment, there is no substitute for having an innovative and distinctive brand expressed in "experiences that rivet minds and run away with hearts." Marty Neumeier identifies how design drives this reality, embracing not only products and services but also processes, systems, and organizations. To succeed, companies must be agile, nurture inventiveness, and have an enterprisewide appetite for radical ideas.
