Overview of DMI Research Programs

The Design Management Institute has established an extensive body of research and teaching materials through its Case Study Program, the DMI Academic Journal, the International Forum on Design Management Research and Education, and various sponsored research projects. Since 1987 DMI has built an outstanding research program based on the highest academic standards. Our commitment is to conduct, sponsor, collaborate and disseminate research, and to serve as an international hub for information about research that is relevant to the design management industry.

2006 – 2007 Top Tier Research Priorities

DMI has established three top tier research priorities for 2006 – 2007. The top tier research priorities are important and deserve dedicated research attention. It is planned that DMI will hold Forums, publish the DMI Academic Journal or special issues of the DMI Design Management Review and other publications, and organize research collaborations and commission studies on these top research priorities. Research proposals that address these topics are encouraged, as we seek to conduct and to partner on research about design management. In 2006 and 2007, DMI will have three top tier research priorities in the areas of:

  1. Design and Design Management Competency

  2. Design and Design Management Valuation

  3. Design Management for the 21st Century

DMI Research Grants

DMI has recently formed a research grant program, the Powell Research Grant, in honor of the past president, Earl Powell. The fund will be used to help sponsor professional research or academic student researchers in 2007. Academic student researchers (graduate or doctoral students working collaboratively with faculty advisors) can apply for financial and/or non-financial support for research projects from DMI.

The DMI Case Study Program

The DMI Case Study Program is focused on developing teaching case studies in the classic format and standards of the case study pedagogy developed by the Harvard Business School. Since 1995, 35 DMI cases have been accepted into the Harvard Business School collection and are now marketed and distributed by HBS Publications worldwide. These cases are taught in over 200 business schools around the world. For more information visit the case study catalog and program.

DMI Academic Journal

The DMI Academic Journal is a juried publication that diffuses design management research into the management world. The goal of the Journal is that educators, students, executives and managers in the corporate world will find the discussions and research of considerable interest, as well as applicable to decision making. The Journal is distributed to more than 275 universities as well as to all subscribers of the DMI Design Management Review.

The International Forum on Design Management Research and Education

Founded in 1989, the International Forum on Design Management Research and Education is an organization of researchers and educators whose work embraces problems and issues related to the field of design management. The Forum’s mission is to facilitate communication and encourage collaboration among its constituents; to encourage research that will result in practical applications in both education and practice; and to help educators integrate design management issues into existing educational programs. Selected papers from the Forum are published in the DMI Academic Journal.

The recent meeting of the Forum, an International Conference on Innovation by Brand and Design Management, was held November 29, 2006 in Seoul, Korea. This academic conference is in collaboration with DBMS and IPS in Korea.

Research Dissemination and Funding

As the leading resource and international authority on design management DMI is in a very unique position. To support knowledge sharing and information dissemination, our research intent is to develop an interactive web site so that researchers around the world can share work that is being planned, in process, and new information as it is developed. Please let us know about the research you are conducting and we will post this information on our site.

DMI actively seeks research grants in alignment with our research priorities, and serves as a coordination and dissemination point of future research by connecting researchers, sponsors and practitioners. As a 501(C)3 non-profit academic organization, contributions to DMI are tax deductible.
